Join us together with other sailing enthusiasts, which you will get to know and spend quality time with.

Round Trip – Summary

Get ready for a week filled with action, sea spray, lots of fun together with a magical experience of nature. This trip will give you an unique opportunity to get to know other people who share your passion for the outdoors, combined with seawater and the awesome nature here in Norway. In other words: The perfect trip for a memorable holiday experience!

Don’t hesitate to join this trip even if you have no knowledge about sailing, because you can always learn along the way. If you already have some previous sailing experience, you will be able to develop your skills further by learning from our experienced skipper and sailing instructor. On this trip, you can participate in both sailing and navigation.

We will meet in Tromsø and sail through the spectacular nature on the outer side of Kvaløya and Senja. We will also bring a small inflatable boat that can take us ashore in places that are otherwise difficult to access. If the weather is good, we will spend the night amongst all the little islets out there in the open sea. Waking up in the middle of this stunning scenery is a very special experience.

The outer side of Kvaløya and Senja is the habitat of rare animal and bird species. The sailboat, as an eco-friendly and peaceful means of transport, can get us close to bird species such as puffins, auks and guillemots. If we are really lucky, we can even see whales out in the open sea.

The sailboat is our base during the entire trip, and we will all contribute to the daily routines on board. All our food and non-alcoholic beverages for this trip are loaded in the boat before the sailing trip starts. If you prefer your food served with an alcoholic beverage, you are free to bring your own favourite.

The mountain hike to Segla

Halfway around Senja we are ready for one of the highlights of the sailing trip, which is a hiking trip to the iconic mountain Segla. Segla is named after its shape; Looking like a sail in the wind.

From the charming fishing village Husøy we are picked up by a driver who will take us to the small fishing village Fjordgård at the foot of Segla. This mountain reigns with its characteristic appearance over the sea on the west side of Senja, and standing or lying on the plateau you can look straight down the steep mountain wall that ends abruptly in the sea below us. Here, most people will probably experience a tickly feeling in their stomachs!

Hamn i Senja

We will also visit the resort Hamn i Senja – a popular destination for pleasant dining, accommodation and activities. Here you can enjoy a hot shower and then have a cold beer on the pier, or in the jacuzzi.

For those of you who still have some power left in your legs, we can also recommend a short mountain hike to Sukkertoppen. On the top you will get a panoramic view of the archipelago of Bergsøyan and the open sea beyond. This round trip takes about 2 hours from Hamn. Or, what about a guided kayaking tour into the archipelago of Bergsøyan? With a kayal licence you can also rent your own kayak and the equipment needed for a quiet evening tour all by yourself.

In the waters of the Norwegian Viking Chief Tore Hund

When leaving Hamn in Senja, we will sail further south and soon reach the southernmost point of Senja. From this point we will sail inshore into a more lush landscape.

Before we head north on the inside of Senja back to Tromsø, we will visit the archipelago of the Norwegian Viking Chief Tore Hund in Harstad.

This sailing trip wants to offer you some of the best experiences of sailing in Norway. Welcome aboard for an exciting holiday week!

Day 1 – Welcome aboard!

Section: Tromsø Port – Røssholmen

Distance: 25 nautical miles

Duration: 8 – 12 hours

We will meet in Tromsø guest port at 10 AM. Our boat is located at the floating dock outside the Clarion Collection Hotel With. Look for the sailboat with the flag “Seil Senja”. At first, we will spend some time getting to know the sailboat, and we will also talk about safety on board. Then we are ready to untie the lines. Before beginning the sailing trip, the skipper will demonstrate a “man overboard” situation. No worries, neither the skipper nor the participants have to take a swim here! Then we are ready to start the sailing trip by heading north in Grytsundet and further west out to Kvalsundet, between Kvaløya and Ringvassøya. Just before leaving Kvalsundet, we will pass the little island Gåsvær. Around 100 years ago, this little fishing village was one of the busiest in Kvaløya. Then we will sail southwest between small islets and further into the landscape protected area of Håja and Røssholmen. People have lived on the islands in this area since the late Middle Ages, and Røssholmen was for a period an important fishing village. Actually, Røssholmen is not part of the protected area, so we will drop the anchor here for the evening and spend the night here. We will enjoy an evening meal and then take our little inflatable boat ashore for an island expedition. As we walk across the island, we can see traces of former settlements.

Day 2 – Offshore sailing to Senja

Section: Røssholmen – Husøy, Senja

Distance: 20 nautical miles

Duration: 4 – 7 hours

This is the day we are really going to challenge ourselves in offshore sailing. We will set course for the west side of Senja which is known for its spiky fjord arms. After a while as we slowly approach Senja, we will see these special rock formations rise in front of us, from distant mountain-like shapes far away to monumental peaks that eventually will rise above us. Then we will head into Øyfjorden towards the charming fishing village Husøy.

Day 3 – The mountain hike to Segla

Today we will be picked up by a driver at 9 AM at the sailboat on Husøy. The driver will take us in a maxi taxi to the small fishing village Fjordgård at the foot of Segla. This will take us about 30 minutes from Husøy. We will start the mountain hike at Fjordgård school, where we will follow a forest track up towards Storvatnet in a southerly direction. The forest track then quite quickly turns into a trail, and we will follow this trail further until we turn right from a crossroad. From here we will quickly reach higher up the mountain and be rewarded with the fantastic view across the fjord Mefjord. Now the steep climb up to the top of Segla will begin. From the top of the mountain the view is spectacular towards the fjords and mountains on the west side of Senja. The bold one who is willing to take the risk of looking down the cliff, can look 600 meters straight down into the sea. But hold on to your hat, it’s airy up here!

Day 4 – Passing the mountain ranges of monumental peaks

Section: Husøy – Hamn i Senja

Distance: 23 nautical miles

Duration: 4 – 8 hours

The sailing trip from Husøy starts outwards through Øyfjorden, again passing the impressive mountain ranges that rise above us. Here on the outer side of Senja, the mountains are known for being wild and dramatic. If you have seen pictures from Senja, you have probably also seen pictures of the wild and spiky Okshornan, which we will be passing this day. Day 5 – In the waters of the Norwegian Viking Chief Tore Hund Section: Hamn i Senja – Bjarkøy Distance: 32 nautical miles Duration: 5 – 11 hours From Hamn i Senja, we will head southwest in the direction of Andenes. We will pass the characteristic mountain Teisten, and continue further inwards the Andfjord towards the archipelago of the Norwegian Viking Chief Tore Hund in Harstad. We will dock at Bjarkøy, which is one of the islands told to be the northernmost populated archipelago in the world. On this island where he had his farm and boathouse, we can follow in the historical footsteps of the Norwegian Viking Chief Tore Hund.
