Sailing at night

Sailing at night is a very special experience. When the day ends and it’s getting completely dark around us, it’s a bit like sailing into another world.

Our normal daylight reference points, such as visible beacons and landscapes, are now replaced with light signals and their various characteristics.

At first, sailing at night might feel a bit nerve-wracking and even a little bit scary. But if everything is done correctly, lighthouse navigation and interpretation of light signals are a safe way to navigate. Just as you know, it is both exciting and fun!

A bit of theory – a lot of practice

As a participant in this sailing course, you will practice navigation in the dark with an experienced skipper and sailing instructor.

In this sailing course, we will practice lighthouse navigation and interpretation of light signals. You will get to practice on how to recognize the different beacons by interpreting their light characteristics, and learn how to recognize them in the chart. You will also learn how to plan a safe night cruise.

You will learn about proper use of navigation lights, you will practice on how to recognize and distinguish between different types of vessels at sea and how to interpret their courses.

In this sailing course, we will focus on how to practice safe night sailing. That’s why you will also learn about AIS and GPS/chart plotters as supplements in navigation in the dark.

The sailing course will start at 16 pm and end at about 02 am the next day. Accommodation in the boat and meals on board are included.

Qualifications needed

Having a boating license prior to this sailing course is not an absolute requirement, but will give you some advantage before the course. On the other hand, before the course we will send you the theory on lighthouse navigation and interpretation of light signals. This theory will correspond to the theory of the Boating License Exam.

Knowing how to sail is not mandatory to participate in this sailing course, since we will mostly practice on navigation and therefore we will be using the boat engine.
